Essex County Legal Aid Association (founded in 1920)

Essex County Legal Aid Association is a Newark, New Jersey-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free legal assistance to low-income Essex County residents facing eviction and other civil law crises.

We serve individuals and families struggling with landlord-tenant disputes, consumer finance issues, and homelessness, offering immediate legal advice, document preparation, and advocacy.

ECLAA distinguishes itself through its commitment to providing accessible, compassionate legal support directly within the community, operating as a ‘legal emergency room’ at the Essex County Hall of Records. Founded in 1920, we’ve helped over 10,800 clients and 2,700 children, partnering with government agencies, nonprofits, and law firms to ensure holistic client support.
